Unzipping compressed files in linux

There are several commands provided by linux to unzip a compressed file. The choice of either is however dependent on the file name. The syntax is as follows:

Zip

unzip filename.zip

Tar

tar xvf filename.tar

Gunzip

gunzip filename.gz
